Over the intercom, Rido drawled the announcements, Beethoven’s sixth symphony playing in the background:
“Congratulations… You 18 are the only ones participating in this game. The other half of your class got involved in an… accident. Included in your bags are your weapons, a compass, LED shake-charge flashlight, 500 mL bottle of spring water, a roll of bread, and the official game map PLUS your map booklet:

“More however, will be set up on a whim… and once they are announced you have an hour to vacate the ward.”
“Other than that, the game begins now, 600 on the 22nd of December, 2009. More announcements including updated deaths provided every six hours. Enjoy the game.”
Some crackle on the intercom, and then, “Oh yes, where you are starting out… the Imperial Palace here in Chiyoda? We have taken the liberty of installing some land mines in the grounds.”
The intercom shuts up with further crackling.
